Swimming alongside manta rays — with wingspans reaching 5–7 metres — is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters you can have anywhere in the world. Bali is one of the few places where this happens reliably, in shallow, accessible water, without requiring any diving certification.
Manta Point, located off the southwest tip of Nusa Penida, is consistently rated among the top 10 snorkeling and diving sites on Earth. This guide tells you exactly what to expect and how to plan a private charter specifically for manta ray snorkeling.
Where is Manta Point Bali?
Manta Point (also called Manta Bay) sits off the southwest coast of Nusa Penida, the large island 45–60 minutes by speedboat from Serangan Harbour in South Bali. It's one of three major snorkeling/dive sites in the Nusa Penida marine protected area, alongside Crystal Bay (mola-mola season) and Gamat Bay.
The site is famous for a natural "cleaning station" where manta rays come to have parasites removed by smaller cleaner fish. This behaviour keeps the mantas hovering in place for extended periods — giving snorkelers extraordinary face-to-face encounters at 5–10 metres below the surface.
Best Time to Snorkel with Manta Rays in Bali
Manta ray sightings at Manta Point occur year-round, but sighting rates are significantly higher during the dry season:
- Peak season (June–October): Calm seas, excellent visibility (15–25m), highest manta activity. This is also Bali's peak tourist season, so book boats early.
- Shoulder season (April–May, November): Good sighting rates, fewer crowds, slightly choppier seas on some days.
- Wet season (December–March): Mantas still present but visibility can drop to 8–12m on bad days. Some rough sea days may require rerouting to calmer spots.
The best time of day is typically 7:00–10:00 AM, when the cleaning stations are most active and before afternoon currents pick up.
Pro tip: Arrive at Manta Point early. Mantas are most active in the morning. Afternoon visits often have stronger currents and reduced activity.
What to Expect at Manta Point
Your boat anchors or drifts over the cleaning station. You slip into the water with your snorkeling gear — mask, fins, life jacket — and look down to see manta rays gliding just metres below the surface.
Mantas at this site are accustomed to human presence and typically don't flee. They hover, circle, and feed at the cleaning station for 15–45 minutes at a time. It's common to see 3–6 mantas simultaneously. On good days, 10+ mantas are visible.
The mantas here are reef mantas (Mobula alfredi), the smaller species (5–7m wingspan). Giant oceanic mantas (Mobula birostris, up to 9m) are occasionally sighted in deeper water offshore.
Safety and Ethics
Nusa Penida is a protected marine area. Manta rays are protected under Indonesian law. The rules:
- Do not touch or chase mantas
- Do not wear sunscreen that's not reef-safe
- Keep a minimum distance of 3 metres
- No flash photography underwater
- Do not dive below mantas to push them upward
Barunago's guides brief all guests on these rules before entering the water. Responsible snorkeling ensures mantas continue returning to this cleaning station year after year.
How to Get to Manta Point by Private Charter
The most common way to visit Manta Point is on a private day charter from Serangan Harbour, South Bali. A dedicated Manta Point charter typically combines the site with one or two other snorkeling stops (Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay) for a full-day experience.
Charter Options for Manta Point
All charters depart from Serangan Harbour with free hotel pickup from South Bali. Travel time to Manta Point is approximately 50–65 minutes by speedboat.
Manta Point vs. Crystal Bay vs. Gamat Bay
| Site | Main Attraction | Best Season | Depth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manta Point | Manta ray cleaning station | Year-round (peak Jun–Oct) | 5–25m |
| Crystal Bay | Mola-mola (ocean sunfish) | Jul–Oct only | 20–40m (dive) |
| Gamat Bay | Coral gardens, reef fish | Year-round | 3–15m |
Do You Need to Know How to Swim?
You do not need to be a strong swimmer for Manta Point snorkeling. Life jackets are provided for all guests. However, you do need to be comfortable floating in open water. The site can have mild to moderate currents — your guide will advise you on the day and stay close to inexperienced swimmers.
Diving certification is not required for snorkeling — mantas come to within 5–10m of the surface, accessible to any snorkeler.
What to Bring to Manta Point
- Reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen damages coral and may deter mantas)
- Rash guard or wetsuit (water temp is ~27–29°C, but wind chill on the boat is real)
- Underwater camera or waterproof phone case
- Motion sickness tablets if needed (the boat ride can be choppy, especially in wet season)
- Light snacks and water (lunch can be arranged)
Snorkeling gear (mask, fins, life jacket) is provided in every Barunago charter.
